Comparison

   COMPARISON PAPER

This is to be a paper (4-6 pages typed) comparing two different art works. Think of the
paper as being a longer version of a comparison of two slides on a test. Approach this
      paper in the same way:
bulletFirst ANALYZE the works by:
bulletIdentifying the artists, objects, cultures or styles to be studied.
bulletDate them and locate their origins.
bulletIdentify the materials of which they are made.
bulletTell how large they are.
bulletIdentify the subject matter or meaning.
bulletAsk the same questions you did when analyzing a single work
of art (see Xerox paper taken from Henry Sayer's WRITING
ABOUT ART).
bulletThen COMPARE the works, artists, styles, etc.

In other words, this is to be an extension of your first short paper which
was an analysis of a single work of art. This time you are examining the
works for their resemblances to and differences from each other.

It is usually advisable to begin by defining the main issue. Then make a
comparative analysis. Things are to be examined for their resemblance to
and differences from other things. The point is not simply to list pairs of
similarities and differences but to illuminate the works by making thoughtful
comparisons.

***If you have not already done so, read Chapter 3: "Writing a
Comparison"
from Sylvan Barnet's A SHORT GUIDE TO WRITING
ABOUT ART.
This is on reserve at the front desk in the Library.
