Silk was discovered in China as early as the thirtieth century before the birth of Christ.  There are mysterious and romantic legends about the discovery of silk.  One involves a girl in love with a horse.  She turns into a silk worm and spits out silk because she missed the horse.  Another legend involves women who just happened to find the silk when they were picking fruit.  A strange piece of fruit that they found was so hard they had to beat it with sticks.  The hard fruit wasn’t a fruit at all, it was a cocoon for silkworms.  Since the discovery of silk, the Chinese have found that it is one of the best materials for clothing.  During the Han Dynasty, trading of silk with other countries became popular (Shan).
