As a man who was easily
stifled by conventionality, Marcel Duhcamp cast away all conformist
thought when he created his feminine alter ego; her name was Rrose
Selvay. In order to gain a female perception, Duchamp would cross-dress
to become Rrose Selvay. When Duchamp was Rrose, he was not simply a man
in woman’s clothing; he became all women – his lovers,
his painted nudes, the Mona Lisa.
By becoming Rrose he gained perspective into anti-masculine
sensitivities and female archetypes.
