Kay Jamison also conducted a study in order to see the connection between madness and creativity.  Her study included 47 important British writers and artists.  87% were male with the average age of 53, 38% had been treated for affective illness.  Writers were found to have more psychiatric problems and poets with the most.  Half of the poets received treatment for depression, as did 2/3 of playwrights, and 20% of biographers.  One third of the 47 had severe mood swings and 17% of poets were treated for mania (Jamison).
