Heavy metal developed in both Britain and America.  Distortion and feedback were characteristic of both hard rock and heavy metal in Britain and they tended to use riffs as the basic structural element of the music.  The British-influenced heavy metal featured artists such as Led Zeppelin, a group formed by musicians who had been part of the blues revival and whom had a grand influence on the development of heavy metal, Black Sabbath, and AC/DC.  American artists included Ted Nugent, Kiss, and Van Halen (Brown).
