The development of
pop-styled rock music led to teen-idol pop, “spectorsound,”
and surf sound. Dick Clark began
hosting American Bandstand which brought Philadelphia pop music and dance styles to teenagers all
over the country. Phil Spector developed the “wall of sound.” It involved the use of so many
instruments, overdubbed and mixed so thoroughly, that the result was a
massive fortification of instrumental colors and timbres behind the
vocals. The
Beach Boys, a group still popular today, were responsible for the
beginnings of the ever famous surf sound.
Songs such as “Surfin’ Safari” and “Surfin’ USA” showcased this sound (Sumrall).
