First the main uses of music in the treatment of brain damage was that it is used to give psychological stimulation, in the setting up of a group therapy situation, and in improving motivation.  It also acts as a powerful socializing agent and may provide a satisfying hobby.  Secondly, it can aid physical therapy, giving rhythmic help in walking and other patterned activities, and with breathing.  It also assists in the recovery of function of paralyzed limbs, in rebuilding of co-ordination, postural sense, the sense of personal and extra-personal space, and in general proprioception.  In problems of articulation and general speech difficulties music can help.  Lastly, for those who are beyond rehabilitation, music provides a meaningful activity which helps to retain alertness and general activity.  For all the blind it is essential to build up a satisfying way of life, to compensate in some measure for the loss of sight and to give a source of aesthetic, intellectual and social stimulation-music may help.  Discussing music can also provide a common interest between the blind and the sighted and the sighted.
