Music is a medium widely used by man for social communication and socials intercourse- a unique use which makes it a valuable therapeutic medium (1).  Summing up this early experiment in using background music, there were strong indications that it was a generally positive factor which should be continued.  However, it was noted that careful selection of music was important.  The psychiatrist also observed that the selected background music apparently enhanced his interaction with patients while he was on the ward, and that this had not happened when other sound sources such as radios were present.
