Welcome to the second semester of business applications programming using the language COBOL. This class assumes that you have already studied and used basic COBOL commands such as ADD, SUBTRACT, MULTIPLY, DIVIDE, COMPUTE, PERFORM, IF and SEARCH. In addition, a comfortable knowledge of one-dimensional tables is expected.
This semester will cover more advanced concepts (Multi-dimensional tables, Sorting, Report Writer, Subprograms, File Access, On-line programming) and some of the more advanced programming techniques for typical business applications. In addition, we will look more closely at debugging. We will continue to use structured programming techniques.
The six programming assignments for this semester will be more difficult and will take more of your time. You will have approximately two to four weeks to complete each assignment. You must work independently and complete each program on your own. The programs will not only include sequential file processing, but random file processing, sorting and subprograms.
